Conner Mulcahy

Noise Color also known as Conner Mulcahy is a singer, songwriter, and producer who makes conceptual neo-psychedelic, indie rock and electronic-infused pop. He first came onto the scene with his 2019 single “Emphasis On You” before expanding his style with the aggressively experimental Halloween instrumental released on Oct 29, 2020 “This House Isn't Haunted You Just Live Here”. In 2021, he emotively opened up about his disability and experience in a wheelchair on the aptly titled “Chair”. Born and raised in California’s Bay Area, Conner grew up in a musical family, his childhood filled with a flurry of classic music as a foundation of 60’s british invasion, musicals, and a more modern and electronic musical education from his mother.

Interested in creating from a young age, he wrote his first ballad “Falling Close To You” at the age of 10 about the destructive relationship between himself, his mother and her then boyfriend. At age 12 tragedy struck when Conner was in an accident that would change the course of his life forever. In the summer before eighth grade, a boating vacation gone wrong would leave him with a Spinal Cord Injury and the likelihood of being in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. After a time of grief and acceptance this invigorated Conner’s drive to create music. Not for himself this time but in the hopes he could make genuine emotional connections to potential fans and help other young kids that fell into a similar situation as his. His grandmother Noni bought him his first acoustic guitar and he got to work writing emotionally fueled songs inspired by Green Day, The Beatles, and My Chemical Romance whose albums were close confidants during his time in the hospital. By the time he was in highschool Conner had started his first band “White Dot” with his best friend and close musical collaborator with multiple musicians featured in various projects. Conner started using Logic Pro X at 14 with the intention of creating EPs, which served as songwriting, production, and performing experience with his White Dot at the time. When college came around Conner doubled down on his passion, expanding it into the desire to produce, mix and master music, and hone his skills. He attended SAE Institute from Emeryville California graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Interactive Audio.

Now in 2023 Conner is Noise Color with a wave of new influences under his belt. Noise Color is gearing up to release the concept EP “She’s A Lovely Inhuman” on March 1st 2023 quickly followed later this year by its sister EP concluding the narrative of a mysterious and Inhuman girl falling into a toxic relationship with a dying boy. The first EP inspired by his fathers relationships and the upcoming release by his mother’s relationship with her ex. Noise Color’s future is one of poppy ballads and experimental takes on punk music with a world of experimentation and concepts tying it all together.

Chair Photo: @cole_schroeder_ "I hate my chair I hate everything it stands for" Well that is a spacey piece of psychedelia alright, the kind that takes the listener free of daily concerns and into the outer atmosphere of their own and rarely used imagination. We do need such ambient qualities to have us getting back to the wonder that we once had. From the onset Chair feels very dramatic and soundtrack-ish creating a divergent dark atmosphere, then the beat begins and the dense wash of vocals feels very oppressive and caustic. Noise Color does operate in a cavity of sound of their own making, ebb and uneven flow with a depth to the waves of ambience to warrant further inspection of this act's work.

Cry At Work “Boys will be boys don’t let them have fun yet” “On a psychedelic mission to mars it seems Noise Color is taking us along for the ride, but what a woozy effect it will have on us. Cry at Work sure does up the ante in creating a sound that is both rock and electronically derived to a degree that it felt like it has come through the mincer before arriving at our door. I appreciated the experimental appeal of this and I thought the track had stellar guitar arrangements too with a unique energy, cool performance and nicely saturated sound. Noise Color does their own thing and it made for a tough one to grasp with experimental elements in the track that give it a nice avant-garde feel with some ambient moments.”

Makin’ Money “Makin all your money off bad bets and heavy guesses” Nice soothing, floaty neo-psychedelia during the first 50 seconds. Cool synth sound. We like the clean guitar delivery. Love the vocals on this one and the soundscape is super creative.

Emphasis On You "I put all my emphasis on you and now I'm out of breath, you put all your emphasis on you and now we're bored to death" It doesn't have an energetic streak in its body but Noise Color give us a reason to slow down as a result. They do so with leanings towards a sixties way of doing things that are psych to their last breath, but that doesn't mean that the passion isn't there for Emphasis On You. It has plenty of it amid all the thick acrid arrangements. There is fun to be had in the surreal energy of the track adding a unique touch making a nice contrast to the other elements of the song. I liked the pop-rock vibe, feeling dynamic with experimental elements in the track creating a nice sense of exploration and discovery.

She's A Lovely Inhuman "I can't talk they all banter, I can't walk she's a dancer" Cover Art by: @artisaright ""She's A Lovely Inhuman" compels with its drive from effervescent synth-laden yearning into moments of rock-forward charisma. What a languid aural aroma Noise Color has created here and it has quite a 90's laced quality that is equal parts Flaming Lips, Happy Mondays and god knows what else given how mad and furious it gets at times. The hooky "she pulls her hair down," vocal passion invigorates amidst the illuminating synth pads, with the mix in general exuding a dreamy psych-pop component that escalates into a more frenzied rock presence in the second half. In fact I would say that the track gets a little Sex Pistolly at times so just when we think we have a handle on it goes off on one. A solid vocal performance sits with ease amidst rolling guitar, a punchy drum kit backbone pulse and a steady bass low end. Immersive, imaginative lyricism with plenty of push and pull to the energy and arrangement.”

Song: Pose For Picture “Vile woman creeping under your skin” ♿️REVIEW “What a plume of noise to greet us here, fulsome and immersive and the kind that you'd expect in a hall of mirrors with sound effects bouncing off our every reflection. An out-of-the-box creative and artistic approach. It made for experimental sensations at every turn and both friends and foe fighting for our attention in a molten electronic mix of cut and pasteism!”
